about

In 1995 I was releasing music on my own "Lupus Enterprises" label, which was basically just me writing "Lupus Enterprises" on tapes and giving them to friends. I had no interest or aptitude when it came to self-promotion, so when Jim Dejong ("The Infant Cycle') asked to release some of my music on the Doomsday Transmissions ("DDT") tape label, I was ecstatic.

I recorded "L'il Debbil" immediately after "Pleasure Pain Fighting Rose," and it was always intended to fill one side of a 30-minute DDT release called "A Split Cassette" (DDT09). I had dabbled with long compositions in the past, but this was extreme: thirty minutes of continuous 4-tracked material, each song running into the next.

The songs were about a genius inventor named Chuck and his diabolical creation, Samantha. I used the usual GREENman techniques: sequencing, sampling, feedback, tape speed manipulation, and an entire section built with tape hiss and
a Roktek chorus pedal. I recorded the introduction separately at CKMS. I've always been very happy with the way "L'il Debbil" turned out.

During the earlier recording of the "Die...Alive!" tape, I'd also finished "Running Heads 1.8 to 1.10." This appeared on a DDT compilation: "A Doomsday Transmission," which included inserts to represent each track. This song appears on this revisitation, and the insert (by Shereen Ramprashad) is in the included PDF booklet.

The other two tracks on this revisitation are previously-unreleased collaborations that were recorded around the same time: "Double Arrow" (a 4-tracked guitar and tabla jam with Detlef Burghardt) and "Philler Family Hour" (a chill improvisation recorded with Eli McIlveen at CKMS).
